Common Russian Grammar Mistakes — Learn from Errors

The same handful of mistakes catch out almost every learner. Among the most frequent: confusing the verbs of motion идти́/ходи́ть; using в where на is required (and vice versa) — на рабо́те but в шко́ле; forgetting that animate masculine accusative looks like genitive (Я ви́жу студе́нта, not *студе́нт); and using the imperfective when context requires the perfective aspect.

Other classics: omitting the soft sign in feminine nouns (ночь, not *ноч), mixing up prepositions с + genitive ("from") vs с + instrumental ("with"), and over-translating English articles (Russian has no "a" or "the"). Learning to recognise these patterns saves months of confusion.
