Russian Numbers & Counting

Counting in Russian gets tangled up with the case system: nouns counted with 1 take the nominative singular (один дом), 2–4 take the genitive singular (два дома, три дома, четыре дома), and 5 and above take the genitive plural (пять домов). The number 1 (один/одна/одно) and 2 (два/две) also agree in gender with the noun.

Cardinal numbers (one, two, three) are used for counting; ordinal numbers (first, second, third — пе́рвый, второ́й, тре́тий) decline like adjectives and agree with the noun. Learn numbers 1–10 first, then 11–19, then the tens, then the hundreds. Once you have the patterns, dates, prices, telephone numbers and time follow naturally.
