бежать vs бегать
bezhat vs begat — run in one direction now vs run regularly or around
Register: neutral
What it really means
Бежа́ть is the unidirectional motion verb for running in one direction, usually now: "Я бегу́ к автобусу" (I am running to the bus). Бега́ть is multidirectional: running regularly, jogging as a habit, running around, or making repeated trips. It also describes a general ability or activity: "Он умеет бегать" (He knows how to run).
As with other motion verbs, the contrast is not simply present versus past. Use бежать for the direction of a current run, and бегать for repeated or general running. Prefixed verbs such as побежать (start running) and прибежать (run and arrive) describe one completed episode.
Examples in natural speech

Common mistakes
Do not use бегать for one current run toward a destination: "Я бегаю к автобусу" normally sounds habitual. Do not use бежать for a regular jogging routine: "Я бегу каждое утро" is not the normal choice; say "Я бегаю каждое утро."
Memory tip
Бежать is one directed run now; бегать is regular, repeated, or running around.
