What it really means

Что can be the question word "what" or the conjunction "that": "Я знаю, что он дома" (I know that he is home). Чтобы combines что + бы and introduces a purpose, desired result, or hypothetical wish: "Я пришёл, чтобы поговорить" (I came in order to talk) and "Хочу, чтобы ты пришёл" (I want you to come).

After чтобы, Russian normally changes the subject of the subordinate clause into the past-tense form, even when the English translation uses a present or infinitive: "чтобы ты пришёл" literally has a past-looking form but means "so that you come/will come."

Common mistakes

Do not use что alone after "want": "Я хочу, что ты пришёл" is incorrect; use "Я хочу, чтобы ты пришёл." Also do not assume the infinitive always follows чтобы: use the infinitive when the subject stays the same ("Я пришёл, чтобы помочь") and a finite clause when it changes.
