What it really means

"Что-нибудь" (-нибудь suffix) = anything at all, open-ended, hypothetical — used in questions, invitations, conditional sentences, and future contexts where the specific item does not matter.

Common mistakes

Using "что-то" in open questions and offers is the most common error. "Хочешь что-то выпить?" sounds odd to native speakers — use "что-нибудь" because the offer is open-ended. Save "что-то" for observations: "Что-то здесь не так" (Something here is not right).
