думать vs считать
dumat vs schitat — think/ponder vs consider, believe, or count
Register: neutral
What it really means
Ду́мать means think: to have an opinion (я думаю, что...), to think about something (думать о...), or to ponder. Счита́ть can mean count, but with a clause or an object plus predicate it means consider, regard, or believe: Я считаю, что это важно; его считают хорошим врачом.
Думать is the usual conversational “I think.” Считать often sounds more deliberate, evaluative, or formal when giving a considered judgment. It is not simply a more advanced replacement for думать.
Examples in natural speech
Я думаю, что он придёт.
I think he will come.
О чём ты думаешь?
What are you thinking about?
Я считаю, что это хорошая идея.
I consider this a good idea.
Его считают отличным специалистом.
He is considered an excellent specialist.
Дети считают до десяти.
The children are counting to ten.
Common mistakes
Do not use считать for every instance of English “think.” For thoughts in progress or thinking about a topic, use думать. Conversely, думать someone a specialist is not Russian: say считать кого-то специалистом.
Memory tip
Думать is thinking in your mind; считать is reaching a judgment—or counting.
Frequently asked questions
Is считать the same as думать?
Not quite. Both can introduce an opinion, but думать is the normal general verb think, while считать means consider or hold a considered view.
How do I say think about in Russian?
Use думать о: думать о работе means think about work. Считать does not use this pattern for mental reflection.
Can считать mean count?
Yes. Считать means count in contexts such as считать деньги or считать до десяти.
