менять vs изменить
menyat vs izmenit — replace/exchange generally vs alter something once
Register: neutral
What it really means
Меня́ть usually means change, replace, or exchange something as a process or routine: менять деньги, одежду, пароль. Измени́ть means alter something once or produce a completed change: изменить план, мнение, расписание. Both are transitive and take the changed thing in the accusative.
These are useful contrasts but not a regular aspect pair. Изменя́ть is the standard imperfective partner of изменить in the sense alter; it also has the separate meaning be unfaithful to someone. In replacement and exchange contexts, менять commonly pairs with поменять.
Examples in natural speech
Я меняю пароль каждый месяц.
I change my password every month.
Он меняет рубли на евро.

Нужно изменить план.

Она изменила своё мнение.

Не меняй тему.

Common mistakes
Do not treat менять and изменить as a simple aspect pair in every meaning. Use менять/поменять for replacing or exchanging, and изменять/изменить for altering. Изменять кому-то can also mean be unfaithful to someone.
Memory tip
Менять often swaps one thing for another; изменить alters its state, form, plan, or direction.
