можно vs нужно / надо
mózhno vs núzhno / nádo — can/may vs need to / must
Register: neutral / colloquial
What it really means
"Можно" expresses permission or possibility: "you may," "you can," or "it is possible." "Нужно" and "надо" express necessity: "you need to" or "you must." All three are impersonal words, so the person who can or needs to do something is normally in the dative: "мне можно" (I am allowed), "мне нужно" (I need to).
"Нужно" and "надо" are close in meaning. "Нужно" is neutral and works in more contexts, including "it is necessary." "Надо" is shorter and more conversational. With a noun, "нужно" can also mean "needed": "Мне нужно время" (I need time).
Examples in natural speech
Можно войти?
May I come in?
Здесь нельзя курить.
You mustn't smoke here. (It isn't allowed.)
Мне нужно позвонить маме.
I need to call my mum.
Надо купить хлеб.
We need to buy bread.
Тебе можно взять ещё один.
You may take one more.
Мне нужно немного времени.
I need a little time.
Common mistakes
Do not say "я можно" or "я нужно." These impersonal words use the dative: "мне можно" (I may) and "мне нужно" (I need to). Also, "можно" is permission/possibility, not obligation: "Мне можно идти" means I am allowed to go, while "Мне нужно идти" means I need to go.
Memory tip
"Можно?" asks whether the door is open; "нужно/надо" says the task is on your list. Put the person in the dative: мне, тебе, ему, ей.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between можно and нужно in Russian?
"Можно" means can/may or is allowed/possible. "Нужно" means need to or must. "Мне можно уйти?" = May I leave? "Мне нужно уйти" = I need to leave.
What is the difference between нужно and надо?
Both mean "need to" or "must." "Нужно" is neutral and slightly more versatile; "надо" is very common in conversation and sounds more direct. In many everyday sentences they are interchangeable.
Why does Russian say мне нужно instead of я нужно?
These are impersonal constructions. The person experiencing permission or necessity goes in the dative: "мне нужно" literally means "to me it is necessary."
