писать vs написать
pisat vs napisat — write as a process vs write/finish one text
Register: neutral
What it really means
Писа́ть is imperfective: it describes writing as an ongoing process, a repeated activity, or a general skill. Написа́ть is perfective: it presents one text or message as completed, often with a finished result. The prefix на- turns the open-ended activity into a bounded act of producing a text.
Use писать when you focus on what is happening or what someone does regularly: "Я пишу письмо" (I am writing a letter). Use написать when the important point is that the letter gets written: "Я написал письмо" (I wrote the letter).
Examples in natural speech
I am writing a letter to a friend.
She writes in her diary every day.
Write to me this evening.
He wrote the article in a week.
I have not written the report yet.
Common mistakes
Do not use написать for an action still in progress: "Я сейчас напишу письмо" usually means I will write the letter now and finish it, not that I am midway through it. For "I am writing it now," use "Я сейчас пишу это."
Memory tip
Писать keeps the pen moving; написать puts a finished text on the page.
