пока vs пока не
poka vs poka ne — while/until/bye vs until something happens
Register: neutral / colloquial
What it really means
Пока has several meanings: "while," "for now," or the conversational goodbye "bye." In a time clause it can mean while or until, depending on the verb and context: "Пока я работаю..." (While I work...) and "Подожди, пока я приду" (Wait until I arrive). Пока не adds negation and means "until ... not" — until an event happens: "Не уходи, пока я не вернусь" (Do not leave until I return).
Russian uses the apparently negative form пока не for a positive endpoint. The subordinate verb is often imperfective for an ongoing threshold or perfective for the completed event that marks the endpoint.
Examples in natural speech
Пока я готовлю, накрой на стол.
While I cook, set the table.
Подожди, пока я вернусь.
Wait until I come back.
Не уходи, пока я не позвоню.
Don't leave until I call.
Я не успокоюсь, пока не узнаю правду.
I won't calm down until I learn the truth.
Пока что всё хорошо.
For now everything is fine.
Пока!
Bye!
Common mistakes
Do not translate the не in "пока не" as a literal English negation: "Не уходи, пока я не приду" means "Do not leave until I come." Russian also uses positive пока clauses such as "Жди, пока я приду"; the negative form is especially common when the main clause is negative or the endpoint is framed as not yet reached.
Memory tip
Пока sets the time frame; пока не marks the event that must happen before the next action.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between пока and пока не in Russian?
Пока can mean while, until, for now, or bye. Пока не means until something happens and often appears with a negative main clause: не уходи, пока я не вернусь.
Why does Russian use не after пока for until?
Пока не literally presents the endpoint as "while not yet," but the whole construction means until the event occurs. "Жди, пока я не приду" means wait until I come.
What does пока mean by itself?
Depending on context, пока means while, for now, or goodbye. "Пока я читаю" is while I read, "пока что" is for now, and "Пока!" is bye.
