уж — really / truly / of all things (emphatic particle)

"Уж" is an intensifying particle that adds impatience, determination, or emphasis. Not the same as "уже" (already). Common in: "уж если..." (if you're really going to...), "уж точно" (definitely), "не знаю уж" (I honestly don't know).
