Russian Word Stress Rules & Pronunciation Patterns

Russian word stress is unpredictable and movable: any syllable can be stressed, and stress often shifts when a word changes form (case, number, person). Stress matters because unstressed vowels reduce — most importantly, unstressed О is pronounced like "a" (so молокó sounds like "malakó"), and unstressed Е/Я reduce to a short "i" sound.

Stress can also distinguish meaning: за́мок ("castle") vs замо́к ("lock"); пи́сать (children's word for "to pee") vs писа́ть ("to write"). Russian dictionaries always mark stress with an acute accent on the stressed vowel, but that mark is omitted in normal text. Listen, repeat, and practise so you internalise stress along with each new word.
