Russian idioms reveal a culture obsessed with sharp imagery. "Душа́ в пя́тки ушла́" ("the soul went into the heels") means to be terrified. "Вешать лапшу́ на у́ши" ("to hang noodles on someone's ears") means to deceive. "Не в свое́й таре́лке" ("not in one's own plate") describes feeling out of place.

Many everyday expressions are also worth learning early: коне́чно ("of course"), кста́ти ("by the way"), на са́мом де́ле ("actually, in fact"), всё равно́ ("it doesn't matter, all the same"), ну ла́дно ("OK then, fine"). These conversational glue words make spoken Russian sound natural.
