    Russian Questions

    Ask yes/no questions with intonation, or use a question word for missing information. Learn how case changes кто into кого, кому, and кем; use ли for more deliberate or indirect yes/no questions.
    Three Ways to Ask Questions in Russian

    1. Intonation Only

    Ты говоришь по-русски?
    Do you speak Russian?

    Где ты живёшь?
    Where do you live?
    Question words often come early, but Russian word order can vary

    3. Particle ЛИ

    Говоришь ли ты по-русски?
    Do you speak Russian?
    Ли follows the word in focus; more deliberate/formal than intonation alone

    Question Formation Patterns

    Pattern 1: Subject Questions

    Question word (nominative) + verb + object
    Кто читает книгу? → Студент читает книгу.
    Что лежит на столе? → Книга лежит на столе.

    Pattern 2: Object Questions

    Question word (case depends on verb) + subject + verb
    Что ты читаешь? → Я читаю книгу.
    Кого вы встречаете? → Мы встречаем друга.

    Pattern 3: Circumstance Questions

    Question adverb + subject + verb + object
    Где ты живёшь? → Я живу в Москве.
    Когда он приедет? → Он приедет завтра.
    Common Mistakes & Tips

    Common Mistakes:

    • Wrong case for the object of видеть: Кому ты видишь? → Кого ты видишь?
    • Mixing ГДЕ/КУДА: Куда ты живёшь?
    • Treating one order as mandatory: Ты что читаешь? is conversational; Что ты читаешь? is neutral.
    • Forgetting intonation in yes/no questions

    Ask for the missing role, not just “who”

    The verb or preposition determines the case of кто. Learn each question with a short answer.

    Four useful question patterns

    Yes or no: intonation

    Ты говоришь по-русски. — “You speak Russian.” Ты говоришь по-русски? — “Do you speak Russian?” There is no English-style do/does; spoken intonation marks the question. Вы знаете дорогу? — “Do you know the way?”

    Where? Where to? Where from?

    Где ты живёшь? — В Москве. (location); Куда ты идёшь? — В магазин. (destination); Откуда ты идёшь? — Из магазина. (source). The answer phrase, not the adverb itself, takes the required case.

    Learn place prepositions

    Ли: a deliberate yes/no question

    Придёт ли он завтра? (“Will he come tomorrow?”) is more formal than Он придёт завтра?. The particle follows the word being questioned; don’t insert it automatically into every spoken question.

    Indirect: ask or report politely

    Скажите, пожалуйста, где вокзал? — “Please tell me where the station is.” Я не знаю, где он живёт. — “I don’t know where he lives.” For a yes/no uncertainty: Я не знаю, придёт ли он. — “I don’t know whether he’ll come.”

    A question word often leads (Что ты читаешь?), but Ты что читаешь? can sound conversational or shift emphasis; it is not automatically incorrect. Compare word order and practise questions in sentences. For connected/indirect clauses, see clauses and connectors.
