Russian Prepositions — Common Prepositions & Cases
Every Russian preposition governs a specific case (or sometimes two cases with different meanings). The most common combinations:
- Genitive: из, от, до, без, для, у, о́коло, по́сле, кро́ме.
- Dative: к, по.
- Accusative: в (motion into), на (motion onto), за (motion behind), про, че́рез.
- Instrumental: с, за (location behind), пе́ред, над, под, ме́жду.
- Prepositional: в (location), на (location), о/об, при.
В and на with motion verbs take the accusative ("into / onto"); with location verbs they take the prepositional ("in / on"). This direction-vs-location pairing is one of the most useful patterns to drill.
