Russian Genitive Case — Possession & Quantity
The genitive case (роди́тельный паде́ж) is the busiest case in Russian. Use it for:
- Possession ("of"): кни́га студе́нта ("the student's book").
- Absence with нет: У меня́ нет вре́мени ("I have no time").
- Quantity expressions: мно́го воды́ ("a lot of water"), стака́н ча́я ("a glass of tea").
- After numbers 2–4 (singular) and 5+ (plural): два до́ма, пять домо́в.
- After many prepositions: из, от, до, без, для, у, около, после.
Typical endings: masculine -а / -я (студе́нта, преподава́теля), feminine -ы / -и (кни́ги, неде́ли), neuter -а / -я (окна́, мо́ря). Genitive plural is famously irregular — start with the most common patterns and learn the exceptions as you meet them.
