давать vs дать
davat vs dat — give (ongoing/repeated) vs give (completed)
Register: neutral
What it really means
Давать is imperfective: it describes an ongoing, repeated, habitual, or attempted act of giving and has the present tense. Дать is perfective: it presents one completed transfer or a future promise, because perfective verbs have no ordinary present meaning. Both commonly take the recipient in the dative and thing given in the accusative.
Examples in natural speech
Я часто даю советы друзьям.
I often give friends advice.
Дай мне минуту подумать.
Give me a minute to think.
Он дал сестре ключи.
He gave his sister the keys.
Мы дадим ответ завтра.
We will give an answer tomorrow.
Учитель давал ученикам время на вопросы.
The teacher gave students time for questions.
Common mistakes
Do not use the perfective дать for a present habit: я даю книги друзьям means I lend/give books regularly. Do not mistake the perfective future дам for a present tense; “I give it now” is я даю это.
Memory tip
Давать shows the giving process; дать marks the handoff as complete.
Frequently asked questions
Why does дать have no true present tense?
As a perfective verb, its forms describe future completion: дам means “I will give,” while present ongoing giving uses даю.
Which case marks the recipient?
The dative: дать ребёнку игрушку, давать коллеге совет.
Can давать describe one incomplete attempt?
Yes: он давал мне книгу, но я не взял it describes an attempted or unfolding offer rather than a completed transfer.
