класть vs ста́вить
klast vs stavit — lay/place horizontally vs put upright
Register: neutral
What it really means
Класть means to put or lay something down in a horizontal position, or to place it without focusing on an upright support. You кла́дёте книгу на стол, кладёте деньги в кошелёк, and put a blanket on a bed. It is imperfective and normally describes an ongoing, repeated, or general placement.
Ста́вить means to put something standing, upright, or in a position supported by its base; it is also used for setting an object in a location or arranging a device. You ста́вите чашку на стол, телефон на зарядку, or машину в гараж. The choice follows the object’s position and the conventional action, not simply whether the English verb is “put.”
Examples in natural speech
Я кладу́ книгу на полку.
I put the book on the shelf.
Пожа́луйста, клади́ ключи́ в ящик.
Please put the keys in the drawer.
Она ста́вит чашку на стол.
She puts the cup on the table.
Не клади́ сумку на мокрый пол.
Do not put the bag on the wet floor.
Он ста́вит телефон на зарядку перед сном.
He puts his phone on charge before bed.
Common mistakes
Do not choose класть and ста́вить by translating every English “put” mechanically. A book is usually класть, while a cup is ста́вить because it stands on its base; a phone on a charger is conventionally ста́вить. Remember that класть is imperfective—its perfective counterpart is положи́ть—and ста́вить contrasts with постави́ть.
Memory tip
Ask whether the object lies or stands: horizontal placement is класть, upright or supported placement is ста́вить.
Frequently asked questions
Why does класть look irregular in the present tense?
Its forms include кладу́, кла́дёшь, and кладу́т; these must be learned rather than built from the infinitive mechanically.
Can класть be used with a vertical object?
Sometimes context permits it when the focus is simply placing rather than orientation, but ста́вить is the normal choice for an object standing on its base.
What are the perfective forms?
Положи́ть means put/lay down, while постави́ть means put upright or set in place.
