ли vs или
li vs ili — whether/if vs or
Register: neutral
What it really means
Ли is an enclitic question particle attached after the focused word: «Знаешь ли ты?» It introduces an indirect yes/no question and is not a choice word. Или coordinates alternatives (“or”) and can stand between nouns, phrases, or full questions; in alternatives the case form still follows the sentence’s syntax.
Examples in natural speech
Знаешь ли ты этот город?
Do you know this city?
Я не знаю, придёт ли он.
I do not know whether he will come.
Чай или кофе?
Tea or coffee?
Позвони мне, или напиши сообщение.
Call me, or write me a message.
Важно, согласен ли ты.
It matters whether you agree.
Common mistakes
Do not replace ли with или in indirect questions. Ли normally follows the questioned element, while или means “or”; punctuation around «или» follows clause boundaries, not a fixed rule.
Memory tip
Ли opens a yes/no door; или places two choices side by side.
Frequently asked questions
Can ли begin a question?
It normally follows the focused word, but a phrase such as «Правда ли…» may appear at the beginning of a clause.
Does ли mean English “if” everywhere?
No: it marks an embedded yes/no question, whereas conditional “if” is usually «если».
When does или mean “or else”?
With an imperative, «или» can warn of a consequence: «Поторопись, или опоздаешь» means “Hurry, or you’ll be late.”
