menyat' vs menyat'sya — change something vs change oneself
Register: neutral
What it really means
Менять is transitive: someone changes, replaces, or exchanges something. Меняться is intransitive: a person, situation, or weather changes.
The -ся form removes the direct object and makes the changing entity the subject.
