навстречу vs к
navstrechu vs k — toward/to meet vs to/toward
Register: neutral
What it really means
К is the broad preposition for movement toward a person, place, or time and governs the dative. Навстречу also takes the dative, but adds the idea of moving to meet, facing, or accommodating the target. It can be an adverb and can describe an abstract response as well as physical motion.

Common mistakes
Do not use навстречу as a neutral replacement for every к: идти к станции only states destination, while идти навстречу станции suggests movement to meet or face it. Both govern the dative, including навстречу другу.
Memory tip
К points at a destination; навстречу adds a face-to-face meeting.
