оставаться vs оставить
ostavat'sya vs ostavit' — remain/stay vs leave/leave behind
Register: neutral
What it really means
Оставаться is imperfective and reflexive: a subject remains in a place or state, or continues to be left over. Оставить is perfective and transitive: someone leaves an object or person somewhere, abandons it, or reserves/keeps it. The reflexive forms shift the subject's role and the case pattern.
Examples in natural speech
Я останусь дома сегодня.
I will stay home today.
Она остаётся спокойной.
She remains calm.
Оставь ключи на столе.
Leave the keys on the table.
Он оставил работу в прошлом году.
He left his job last year.
В холодильнике осталось молоко.
There is milk left in the refrigerator.
Common mistakes
Do not use оставить for “stay” without an object: stay is оставаться/остаться. Оставить takes an accusative object and often a location phrase; remaining milk is осталось молоко, not *оставило молоко.
Memory tip
Оставаться stays by itself; оставить puts something down or lets it go.
Frequently asked questions
What is остаться?
Остаться is the perfective counterpart of оставаться for one decision or completed state of remaining: я решил остаться.
Can оставить mean “save”?
Yes: оставить деньги на потом means leave or save money for later; context supplies the intended sense.
Why is “there remains” often осталось?
Russian treats the remaining quantity as the grammatical subject, with the neuter past form in impersonal-looking statements such as осталось два дня.
