ско́лько vs мно́го
skol'ko vs mnogo — how many/how much vs many/a lot
Register: neutral
What it really means
Ско́лько is the interrogative word for asking about quantity: “how many?” with countable things and “how much?” with uncountable things. It normally governs the genitive: ско́лько кни́г? (genitive plural) but ско́лько во́ды? (genitive singular). It can also ask about amounts such as time, money, distance, or price: ско́лько сто́ит билет? It asks for information, rather than asserting a quantity.
Мно́го means “many,” “much,” or “a lot,” and gives a large or substantial quantity without asking a question. Like сколько, it is followed by the genitive: мно́го кни́г and мно́го во́ды. The contrast is therefore question versus statement: ско́лько requests the number or amount, while мно́го states that the amount is large. Both words can quantify countable and uncountable nouns, but neither by itself specifies an exact number.

Common mistakes
Do not use мно́го when asking “how many/how much”: use ско́лько? and then the genitive. Conversely, ско́лько does not mean “many”; it requests a quantity. Keep the noun case straight: ско́лько кни́г / мно́го кни́г, but ско́лько во́ды / мно́го во́ды.
Memory tip
Ско́лько asks for the amount; мно́го supplies a large amount.
Frequently asked questions
What case follows сколько and много?
They normally govern the genitive: ско́лько студе́нтов and мно́го студе́нтов (genitive plural), but ско́лько молока́ and мно́го молока́ (genitive singular).
Can сколько ask about a price?
Yes: ско́лько сто́ит э́та кни́га? means “How much does this book cost?” The answer gives a price, often with рубле́й or another currency.
Does много always mean “too much”?
No. Мно́го simply means a large amount; “too much” is сли́шком мно́го, while “not much” is не мно́го or ма́ло, depending on context.
