вместо vs вместо того чтобы
vmesto vs vmesto togo chtoby — instead of vs instead of doing
Register: neutral
What it really means
Вместо means instead of and normally takes a noun or pronoun in the genitive: вместо сахара, вместо меня. Вместо того чтобы introduces an action or clause that was done in place of another expected action: Вместо того чтобы учиться, он играл.
The phrase is not followed directly by an infinitive without того чтобы in standard neutral prose.
Examples in natural speech

Common mistakes
