вроде бы vs будто
vrode by vs budto — apparently/seemingly vs as if
Register: neutral
What it really means
Вроде бы presents information as approximate, apparently true, or remembered with uncertainty; the particle бы gives it a tentative shade. Будто introduces an apparent comparison (“as if”), reported information (“as though/that”), or a distancing suggestion that something is not quite true. «Вроде бы» is written separately; будто is one word.
Examples in natural speech
Вроде бы встреча в семь.
The meeting is apparently at seven.
Он вроде бы согласился.
He seems to have agreed.
Она смотрела, будто ничего не случилось.
She looked as if nothing had happened.
Будто он всё заранее знал.
As though he knew everything in advance.
Вроде бы всё готово.
It seems everything is ready.
Common mistakes
Do not use будто for ordinary uncertainty about a fact; use вроде бы or кажется. Do not write «вродебы», and do not confuse «будто» with «будто бы» when the extra particle changes the distancing or reported quality.
Memory tip
Вроде бы hedges the speaker’s knowledge; будто creates a comparison or a distanced “as if.”
Frequently asked questions
Can вроде бы mean “approximately”?
Yes in some contexts, but it mainly marks tentative information; for numerical approximation, примерно is clearer.
Does будто assert that something is false?
Not by itself. It presents an appearance or report and lets context determine whether the speaker doubts it.
What is the punctuation after будто?
A subordinate clause introduced by будто is separated according to clause structure; it is not automatically parenthetical.
