занима́ться vs учи́ться
zanimat’sya vs uchit’sya — engage in/study vs study/attend
Register: neutral
What it really means
Занима́ться means to engage in an activity, work on a subject, or study it deliberately. With a subject, it normally takes instrumental case: занима́ться ру́сским means “study Russian,” and занима́ться ма́тематикой means “work on mathematics.” It can also describe an occupation or regular activity, such as заниматься спортом.
Учи́ться focuses on learning or receiving an education. It may be intransitive (учи́ться в университе́те, “study at a university”), take an infinitive (учи́ться чита́ть, “learn to read”), or take a dative person (учи́ться у преподава́теля, “learn from a teacher”). Thus заниматься emphasizes the activity or subject being worked on, while учиться emphasizes the learner’s acquisition of knowledge or attendance at an institution.
Examples in natural speech
Я занима́юсь ру́сским ка́ждый ве́чер.
I study Russian every evening.
Она занима́ется пла́ванием в ба́ссейне.
She practices swimming at the pool.
Мой брат у́чится в университе́те.
My brother studies at a university.
Дети у́чатся чита́ть по-ру́сски.

Мы у́чимся у о́пытного ма́стера.

Common mistakes
Do not use учиться with a subject in the instrumental when you mean actively studying it: я занима́юсь ру́сским, not я учусь русским. Conversely, занима́ться does not by itself mean enrollment at a school; say я у́чусь в колле́дже for “I attend college.”
Memory tip
Занима́ться is the activity on your desk; учи́ться is the learning happening in you or your institution.
