zvat' vs nazyvát' — call by a name vs name/label
Register: neutral
What it really means
Звать is used chiefly for someone’s name, especially in меня зовут and Как тебя зовут? Называть is broader: it can give a name, label a person or thing, or state what something is called.
Examples in natural speech
Меня зовут Анна.
My name is Anna.
Как зовут вашего преподавателя?
What is your teacher’s name?
Его называют отличным специалистом.
They call him an excellent specialist.
Не называй меня так.
Do not call me that.
Этот город называют северной столицей.
This city is called the northern capital.
Common mistakes
Do not use называть in the fixed personal-name question *Как тебя называют? when asking someone’s actual name; say Как тебя зовут? Use называть when the focus is a label, title, or description, including a name given to an object.
Memory tip
Зовут answers the name-tag question; называют attaches a label, whether it is a nickname, profession, or title.
Frequently asked questions
Why is «меня зовут» literally not “I call myself”?
The construction is impersonal in meaning: Меня зовут Анна literally has “me” as the person called Anna. It is the standard way to state one’s name.
Can «звать» mean “call someone over”?
Yes. Мама зовёт детей домой means “Mum is calling the children home.” This is a separate but common sense of звать.
Which case follows «называть кого-то кем-то»?
A descriptive label is normally instrumental: называть его другом, называть город столицей. With a quoted name, use the accusative: назвать ребёнка Анной.
