звонить vs позвонить
zvonit' vs pozvonit' — to call regularly/process vs call once
Register: neutral
What it really means
Звонить is imperfective: it describes calling as a habit, process, or repeated activity. Позвонить is perfective and presents one completed telephone call, especially a planned call.
Use звонить for routines and while someone is on the phone; use позвонить when the important point is making the call.
Examples in natural speech

I call my grandmother every Sunday.
Не звони ему поздно.
Do not call him late.
Я сейчас звоню в банк.

Позвони мне после работы.

Она позвонила и всё объяснила.

Common mistakes
Do not use позвонить for an ongoing call: сейчас звоню, not сейчас позвоню. Conversely, a one-time request normally needs позвони.
Memory tip
Think of по- as one call with a finish line; звонить is the activity.
